The Origin of the Glen Albyn Name
Glen Albyn, known also as Great Glen or Glen Mor, is a series of valleys in Scotland almost 100 km long extending from Inverness over Fort William to Loch Linnhe. The Great Glen follows a large geological fault which bisects the Scottish Highlands in the North into the Grampian Mountains in the South. This beautiful area is one of the most spectacular parts of the country in which Bearded Collies originate.
Glen Albyn used to have a strategical importance as one of main thoroughfares guarded by Scottish clans. A system of interconnected lakes - let's name Loch Dochfour, Loch Ness, Loch Oich, Loch Lochy and Loch Linnheand - and rivers known as Caledonian Canal runs through the valley.
Glen Albyn also used to be one of three whisky distilleries in Inverness (Glen Mhor, Millburn). All three were closed due to the development of the city centre. At the place of the old distillery a new supermarket was built.
Glen Albyn was founded by the City Mayor James Sutherland in 1846. During the World War II the object was occupied by American Army and naval mines were produced there. Until its closure in 1983 the distillery produced whisky of great quality. The bottles of Glen Albyn whisky stored in reserves and private collections are sold for a high price nowadays.
